You’ll get seasoned ground beef stuffed with pizza sauce, spicy pepperoni, and melty Mozzarella cheese, and topped with more pizza sauce and Mozzarella on a toasted bun. Plus, these burgers cook quickly and beautifully on your stovetop, so you can eat them year ‘round! Recipe Notes
- Meat: I used lean ground beef for these Stuffed Pizza Burgers and they turned out amazing! My beef was 90% lean, but anything between 90% – 95% lean should be good!
- Buns: I’m a big fan of the Schmidt Old Tyme 647 sandwich rolls for burgers and sandwiches. They’re only 90 calories each and have 9 grams of fiber per serving, but they taste just like a normal hamburger bun. I find mine at Wegmans!
- Pizza Sauce: I used Delallo pizza sauce, which is a good one. I also really like Mid’s. Feel free to use your preferred brand of jarred pizza sauce.
- Cooking Method: I like to cook the patties for these Stuffed Pizza Burgers on a grill pan or griddle pan on the stovetop. They cook really quickly and easily on a pan, and it makes it easy to make them year-round. I’m sure you could also cook them on the grill, I just haven’t done it that way.
- Additional Ingredients: These burgers are easy to customize with your favorite pizza toppings! I used pepperoni in my burger filling, but you could definitely add mushrooms, fresh torn basil, chopped bell peppers, or whatever else you like on your pizza. Make it your own!

Stuffed Pizza Burgers
Ingredients
- 16 slices turkey pepperoni, chopped (I used Hormel)
- ½ cup jarred pizza sauce, divided
- 3 oz shredded 2% milk Mozzarella cheese, divided
- ¼ teaspoon dried oregano
- ⅛ teaspoon crushed red pepper
- 1.25 lbs uncooked 90% lean ground beef
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
- 4 light hamburger buns, (I used Schmidt Old Tyme 647 sandwich rolls)
Instructions
- In a small mixing bowl, stir together the chopped pepperoni, ¼ cup of the pizza sauce, 1.5 ounces of the Mozzarella cheese, the oregano, and the crushed red pepper to make the burger filling. Set aside.
- Divide the ground beef into eight equal piles and form each pile into a thin patty about 4” in diameter. Divide the pepperoni filling from step one amongst four of the beef patties, about 2 rounded tablespoons each. Use a spoon to spread the filling across the surface of the four patties, leaving a border around the edge. Place one of the bare patties over each of the topped patties, with the filling in between. Press together the edges of the patties all the way around and then use your hands to clean up the edges/make sure they’re sealed.
- In a small dish, stir together the salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Sprinkle half this spice mixture over the filled burger patties. Flip each patty and sprinkle the remaining spices over the other side.
- Lightly mist a nonstick grill pan or skillet with cooking spray and bring over medium-high heat. Place the burger patties on the pan and cook for 4-5 minutes. Flip the patties and cook for an additional 2 minutes before adding a tablespoon of the remaining pizza sauce to the top of each (still cooking) burger. Divide the remaining 1.5 ounces of shredded Mozzarella over the tops of the burgers as well. Using a large pot lid, cover the pan as the burgers continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes until cooked to your preferred doneness.
- Remove the burgers to a side plate to rest. If the cheese isn’t finished melting you can place the pot lid over the top to finish the job.
- Toast the burger buns in your toaster/toaster oven and then place each burger on a bun to serve.

These were delicious. I used 92% lean ground beef from Publix and each burger came out to 304 cals not including buns. I did use Lewis bakery 80 calorie buns, but these would also be delicious without a bun and with a side salad.
Next time I would probably put a little more seasoning and mix it into the beef as they were pretty beefy tasting. But we loved them and my 7 year old even ate a whole one.
